In accordance with Canon 537 of the New code of Canon law, there is to be a finance council in every Parish to help the Parish Priest in the administration of the temporal goals of the parish and to enable the parish to fulfil its mission.

The Parish Priest is the Administrator of the Parish, subject to the norms laid down by the Bishop. The Finance council is an advisory body with a consultative but not an executive function, and is separate from the Parish Council. For the purpose of liaison, one member of the Parish Finance Council should have a seat on the Parish Council.
